Background on Monaco middle school
I teach at Monaco Middle School in the Las Vegas Valley, a Title I school where the majority of our students come from low-income backgrounds. According to the 2013-2014 Accountability Report from the Nevada Report Card, of a population of 1,291 students, 87% qualify for free and reduced lunch. In terms of ethnic breakdown, 84% of students are Hispanic, 9.7% of students are Black, 3.5% of students are White, and less than two percent of our students are Asian. Roughly 12% of our students have an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) and 30% are English Language Learners (ELL). In terms of academic growth, 41% of our students tested Emergent in reading, 100% tested Approaches in writing, and 43% tested Emergent in math. In science, 36% tested Emergent and 33% performed in the Meets range.
